"> '); email facebook instagram linkedin pinterest home about inquire love and other plans where an event planner's personal life and career meet don’t be a sucker for an overpriced engagement ring october 5, 2018 most engagements happen around one of four holidays: thanksgiving, christmas, new year’s eve, and valentine’s day. it may be cliche but it’s true…and it’s time to start thinking about that ring. holiday season is beginning in a couple of months and if you’ve been thinking about popping the big question to your significant other, you don’t need to scrape together all of your savings to offer a beautiful engagement ring. in fact, i don’t think you should be spending the equivalent of your 401k on a ring at all. especially not when a) weddings themselves can be expensive b) you’re starting out your new financial life together and c) there’s so many amazing options that don’t cost an arm and a leg! i’m subscribed to refinery29’s newsletter and i’ve been saving the links to every single time that i’ve seen a post about inexpensive engagement rings. see those here , here , and here . and like any other good millennial, i find everything that i love through instagram. find some inspiration from these great pages here , here , here , and here . you’re welcome! and good luck! read more about my own crazy engagement ring story here. leave a comment categories - dating , resources tagged: happiness , money , wedding , weddings day in the life of an event planner – part 2 the day to day responsibilities in busy season september 28, 2018 i wrote a post back in april about what a typical day is like for an event planner during the slow season . now that things have really kicked in to high gear this season, i thought i’d give you part 2 in this series. keep in mind that this is a lot about what you can expect day to day when you’re an event planner within a venue. continue reading leave a comment categories - career , event planning , my life tagged: busy season , career , clients , event planner , event planning , planning , selling , workplace make yourself a morning person – even if you really don’t think you can september 21, 2018 an aside: in my mid twenties, when i could finally afford “nice” clothes, i loved nasty gal. my very first order was in 2014 and i was on their website, browsing clothes at least once a week for yearssss. i read #girlboss by sophia amoruso and i highly recommend it. when she decided to leave the company, i continued to follow her and i’m currently subscribed to the girlboss newsletter. that’s how i came across this article titled “9 productive as hell things you can do before 9 a.m. every day” . i thought, “this is so me,” and i have even more to say about it. so here i am, duh. i guess i’m lucky because i’m not a morning person and ever since i started my career, my office hours have always started at 10am. in the restaurant and hospitality industry, i think that’s pretty standard. but if i was a teacher and had to be on campus by 7am, i’d be in big trouble. however, in this industry, there’s always some early morning events that pop up on occasion. there was also that time when i moved from manhattan all the way out to a part of queens that was not public transportation-friendly, so i had to leave my apartment at 8am to get to work by 10am. for both reasons, i eventually learned to cope with some tried and true methods. gpoy. continue reading leave a comment categories - my life , personal tagged: beauty , happiness , how to , journey , personal , workplace the dreaded august slump september 14, 2018 now that’s it’s two weeks into september, things have taken a 180 degree turn in the events indsustry. the quiet during august has passed and we’re in full gear with the last of the summer weddings and the oncoming fall weddings in october. plus, most people start seriously thinking about their holiday parties as soon as they get back to work and the kids go back to school after labor day. but why is august so dreadfully slow? a few reasons: continue reading leave a comment categories - event planning tagged: clients , event planning , events , planning , weather an event planner’s wardrobe september 8, 2018 a real-life memo sent to the whole management team: [an] attire note for managers: on 9/13 and 9/15 we have essentially full buyouts. ladies, please plan to wear all black clothing if you are working the pm shift and gentlemen, dark colored suits and ties/nothing flashy, etc. basically with buyouts specifically we really want our team to be in the background so no loud clothing/colors/patterns/etc. boring is better here. the unofficial uniform let me preface this by saying that she came over to myself and the director of events and double-checked that this was in line with what our team wanted. we confirmed because as event planners, we know black is always best. if you didn’t already surmise this, there’s something about all black clothing that’s kind of the signature uniform for event planners. the gm hit the nail on the head regarding blending in to the background with our clothing because event planners are neither the star of the show nor the host/hostess. you might have noticed in your own life that the person who is throwing a party or event is typically one of the most dressed up people in the room. that’s for a reason: they typically want to be distinctive and prominent. event planners, on the other hand, are not meant to stand out but to let our work speak for itself while on the floor*. continue reading leave a comment categories - career , event planning tagged: basics , career , clients , clothes , event planner , event planning , how to , selling , workplace choose your bridesmaids carefully august 19, 2018 my bridesmaids once again, i read a great newsletter from carats and cake founder jessica levin conroy that really inspired me this week. in addition, i’ve been meaning to write about all things to do with bridesmaids but it’s a sensitive subject and i wanted to approach it properly. you can read jess’ full post entitled relationships that matter but the one line that really stuck out to me was, “and like anything in life, it’s less about how many people you know and more about the handful that really matter.” how many times have we heard this? people mention it when you’re job searching or looking for a career mentor. it comes up when you might be looking for donations or a hookup of some sort. but does anyone ever think of this truism when picking out their bridesmaids? i’ve seen a lot of weddings where there is a long lineup of the wedding party with 12 groomsmen on one side and another 12 bridesmaids on the other. i can actually understand why. there’s so many people in our lives that we want to honor when our wedding day comes and asking them to be in the wedding party is one significant way to do that. but there’s a few things to think about below that may make you whittle down that list a little more. bridesmaids are expensive not just bridesmaids though! weddings, in general, are typically a financial investment. from all the big things (venue, catering) to the little things (wedding shoes, gifts for mom and dad), money kind of just flies out the window with everything that couples can feel obligated to do. one of those obligations may be the whole rigamarole of asking someone to be your bridesmaid (let’s just talk about this relationship right now even though i know this can apply to groomsmen too) and what that means from the answer yes to after your wedding. sometimes we may get a card, gift, or even plan a complex surprise to ask our bridesmaids if they want the role. then there’s the bachelorette trips, getting ready matching outfits, (think floral silk robes), bridesmaid dresses, shoes, hair, makeup, accommodations, travel expenses, plus thank you gifts – some or all of which you may cover the cost of. although there’s no obligation to do any of these things, we often get swept up in th
